If you want to inspire a life-long love for opera and musical theatre and offer your student an opportunity to be engaged in the highest possible standard of performing arts training and performance experience in the central Kentucky area, this program is for you!

Mary Joy Nelson has been teaching youth and children in the performing arts for over 15 years.  She is currently the founding director of the Academy of Creative Excellence for the University of Kentucky Opera Theatre and for UKOT/KCTC Broadway Bound summer programs.  In addition to teaching classes and ensembles, she maintains an active home studio.   As a choral director, clinician, and vocal coach, she has worked students through the UK Opera Theatre children’s choruses, “It’s a Grand Night for Singing” youth performance ensembles, Saskatchewan Choral Federation, North Battleford Children’s Choir and Teen Choir, North Battleford Community Youth Choir, Centenary United Methodist Youth choirs, and the Kentucky Classical Theatre Conservatory.   She has served as the program director for the Saskatchewan Express Musical Theatre studio summer programs, and ArtSchool Saskatchewan.  She is frequently sought out as an adjudicator for the Saskatchewan Music Festival Association, and this year will adjudicate the junior vocalist division of the Winnipeg Music Festival in Manitoba, Canada.  In fall 2010, she served as the Youth Coordinator for the World Equestrian Games opening ceremonies, working with Global Creative Connection’s production team to assist 156 students in preparing to perform in the opening ceremonies of the World Equestrian Games in Lexington, KY.
